Who knew there was so much fun to be had at the beach?!? This place is an absolute gem for adventurous children who love to explore.
At low tide the beach has rock pools to explore but perhaps more exciting there are the remains of the shipwreck SS Rosa including the boiler stuck in the rocks and also Robin Lythe’s cave - which you can get out of the other side at low tide.
I’d checked the tide times and we arrived as the tide was going out; after the easy stroll down the tarmac road and steps to the beach we started to explore the left hand side of the cliffs and headed towards the arch. It wasn’t easy going as there were lots of slippy rocks to climb over and this resulted in a few falls too! You can explore the inlets and scramble through archways until you reach the edge of the rocks where you’ll find the boiler of the SS Rosa as well as other ship wreckage amongst the rocks.
After returning to the beach we went to find Robin Lythe’s cave which is to the right hand side of the beach. This side is easier to traverse as you’re mainly walking on the eroded cliff as opposed to clambering across large boulders.
There are caves to explore which take you under the cliffs, some of which you need to wade through and some just have knee high water which you’ll need to cross in places. As you enter the biggest cave via a narrow walkway, the cave opens up into a huge expanse, as you walk into the cave in the dark, the walkway descends towards the light at the other end. It was just past low tide and we were able to get out of the tunnel onto the rocks and explore the cliffs. When we got as far as was safely passable we followed our footsteps back through the cave to the beach again.
At the top of the tarmac road which leads back to the car park there was a cafe and also an ice cream van if you needed refreshments. For only the cost of parking this was an extremely cheap but yet thoroughly enjoyable day out.
